Why do so many people laugh when you say "accordion"!? Let's show them different! This instrument absolutely ROCKS!!!

It is one of the most expressive, international, fun, and emotional instruments out there!

So much more than just "polkas": Argentinian tangos, German beer songs, French cafe, Irish Celtic music, Russian folk, Italian melodic, and the list goes on...

Bottom line: I love this instrument because it is FUN and VERY "produceable".

Half of it is an arsenal of buttons while the other half is a good 'ol piano keyboard, and depending on which model you have, there are many tonal buttons to thoroughly change its personality -- no electricity needed!

No sight-reading required!

All ages welcome!

I can teach you how to create some fun and inspired music on it regardless of your musical tastes, as long as you have a PIANO ACCORDION -- not JUST buttons like a bayan or concertina (sorry -- at this time, please note that I do NOT teach chromatic/diatonic button accordion ...

About Mark V

Mark V has been “Specializing In Melody” since the age of 5 when he discovered his natural ability to play and create catchy tunes by teaching himself the harmonica by ear. He went on to learn the accordion at 10, the piano at 12, MIDI and synthesizers at 15, the guitar at 30, and a long list o

After taking lessons online with Mark, I finally started making progress with the accordion I have had for 2 years and tried to learn by myself. He does a great job teaching music theory in small pieces that I can immediately use and apply to other songs and even other instruments as I go about practicing outside of lessons. I'm so glad I started taking lessons!

Also the TakeLessons website and video chat function work well; I haven't had any problems logging on or with connection so the lessons have all gone smoothly from a technical standpoint.

First lesson and can't wait for the next and beyond. I really appreciated Mark's insights and suggestions to a song I brought to him for feedback. He was very supportive and provided actionable ideas I can use to improve it immediately.

Accordion is one of my truest loves. I've been a musician as long as I can remember. I've been playing traditional Irish accordion for10 years and have had 5 very talented teachers myself. I can apply my performance and teaching techniques to piano or button accordion. I've also played concert piano accordion for 12 years, and can teach the fundamentals of accordion playing, advanced technique and style for accordion, basic to advanced music theory, and general performance and practice techniques. We will do a mixture of ear training and sheet music reading (don't be scared!). I always cater to the individual as well to make the lessons more personalized.

About Connor

I'm a film composer by trade, but I love teaching as well. I love sharing my passion for music with others. I have a BM from Appalachian State University in piano performance and music theory/composition. I also have an MFA in music composition for the screen from Columbia College Chicago. I stu

Accordion is a blast to learn and play.! I specialize in piano accordion but do also play diatonic as well.

Accordion:
I make accordion easy by first teaching one hand at a time . Once the student feels proficient we will begin to incorporate coordination between the right hand, which plays the piano notes and left hand which pulls the bellow and plays the chords. In no time at all the student will be playing accordion songs. I encourage the student to bring in songs they like want to learn.

About Karen

Hi! My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

"Mark has a set system for imparting musical knowledge regarding the accordion, but he allowed me to interrupt his lesson so that I could make sure that I was getting what he was attempting to impart to the unskilled listener.

I have been provided with a few concepts to practice, in anticipation of our next session. He has a great deal of confidence that I will get it-------hopefully he is more right about this than I am. Yet, this is only lesson two and I have set up this new learning experience so that I am only chewing on small bits of the new learning materials a time. John Conlon"

Private Accordion Lessons Near You

The accordion was initially introduced to the United States by Count Guido Deiro, an Italian-American musician who specialized in vaudeville, a theatrical genre of music. It is played by compressing and expanding the bellows of the instrument while pressing keys to produce specific notes.

An invention of early 19th century Europe, the accordion (also known as a “squeezebox”) has become a popular instrument all around the world. It's a mainstay in traditional music and folk songs, but is also widely used in contemporary genres such as dance-pop, cajun, zydeco, jazz, and polka.

A powerful and influential instrument, the accordion's many moods can inspire individuals to romance, merriment, dance, or sorrow. The accordion also features different variations, and some designs

...

are simpler to play than others.

This makes the instrument easily accessible to both beginners and advanced musicians. If you're thinking about strapping in and squeezing the bellows, read on to find out why learning the accordion is well worth your time and effort.

Why Learn to Play Accordion?

Playing the accordion will make you the life of every party you attend, and it's also quite beneficial for you physically! Whether you play seated or standing, the accordion requires proper posture to achieve the right sound and hand positioning on the keys or buttons.

Those who practice good posture while playing an instrument strengthen key muscle groups that support having healthy posture all the time. And good posture imparts all sorts of positive physical benefits like improved breathing, increased circulation, and reduced pain.

The physical skills needed to play the accordion are also very beneficial for the brain. To begin, your hands have to learn to work independently — one playing keys while the other pressing buttons. You’ll also learn to concentrate, keep rhythm, and read music. Practicing all these tasks simultaneously strengthens your memory and multitasking abilities.

Topics You'll Learn in Accordion Classes Near You

The best way to learn accordion is by taking private lessons with an experienced teacher. When you take accordion classes near you, you'll benefit from receiving prompt feedback, personalized instruction, and a teacher's undivided attention.

As a result, students who learn to play accordion with private teachers advance more quickly than those who attempt to teach themselves. Our private accordion lessons near you provide the opportunity to discuss your individual goals with a professional teacher who will tailor lessons to your interests.

Your instructor will also plan your lessons based on the type of accordion you own and the specific style of music you wish to learn. For example, diatonic button accordion lessons for beginners will differ from Tejano accordion lessons.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Accordion Lessons

Want to learn how to play the accordion for beginners? Beginner lessons are intended for students who have little or no previous experience with the instrument. At this level, you'll learn all the basic skills you need to play simple tunes before advancing to more complex music. Your teacher will likely cover the following topics:

  • Accordion anatomy and care
  • How to use your straps and buckles
  • Proper hold, posture, and instrument balance
  • Right and left hand technique
  • Introduction to bass buttons and keyboard
  • Controlling the bellows
  • Music theory for beginners

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Accordion Lessons

Intermediate accordion lessons are perfect for students who already have some experience. In these lessons, you'll build upon your existing knowledge while challenging yourself with more complex techniques. You can expect to learn the following topics:

  • Playing chords
  • Intricate key melodies
  • Complex rhythms on the bellows
  • Descant and bass voicing
  • Playing bass buttons by ear
  • Playing a larger instrument (transitioning from 48 to 120 bass buttons)

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Accordion Lessons

Advanced lessons are best for students who already know their way around an accordion. At this stage, you'll challenge yourself in new ways, perfect existing techniques, and learn advanced skills. Your teacher can also provide advice for securing gigs in the music business. In advanced accordion lessons, you'll cover the following topics:

  • Bellows and finger articulation
  • Bellows reversal
  • Finger swapping
  • Double stops and turnarounds
  • Staccato, trills, and flutters
