How Dance Classes Can Benefit You
Dance is an incredibly beneficial practice — not only professionally, but personally as well. Learning to dance can open up a variety of career opportunities in performing ar
ts and entertainment. Whether you dream of doing pirouettes across a stage as a ballerina in a professional dance company, working as a dancer in the music or music video business, or dancing with guests as a host or hostess on a cruise liner, professional dance lessons can get you there.
Dance classes are also incredibly beneficial for other types of entertainers and performers. If you're in the acting business, in a band, or dream of making it big in musical theater, a background in dance will prove useful. Dance will make you more comfortable and coordinated in your body and help you feel comfortable, using the stage in a performance.
Dance is also very healthy. It's a workout that focuses on three primary aspects of fitness: flexibility, strength, and endurance. This all-in-one workout is good for everyone; it's a fun way to get healthy and stay in shape.
The Best Way to Learn to Dance and What You'll Practice in Lessons
It's easy to find free dance classes, tutorials, and training videos online, but the best way to learn to dance is with a private dance tutor. With a private teacher, you'll spend your time in lessons designed to address your interests, learning needs, and dance goals — rather than wasting time in one-sized-fits-all lessons. You'll pick up new choreography and overcome individual challenges quickly, as you receive immediate feedback.
No two private lessons the same. For example, dance classes for children differ from dance lessons for adults in terms of teaching methods and content. In private lessons, you'll stay motivated and interested, while working at a pace and level that's comfortable for you.
Sample Curriculum for Beginner Dance
If you have no previous formal experience in dance, then beginner lessons are for you. You'll be introduced to the basics of caring for and conditioning your body, while learning beginner techniques in your choice of dance style. In beginner lessons, your teacher might cover the following topics:
- Warming up and stretching out
- Exploring different styles of dance
- Listening to music and finding rhythm
- Basic dance moves and choreography
Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Dance
If you've already had some formal dance training with a professional and feel comfortable with the introductory choreography in your field of dance, then you'll feel most comfortable in intermediate lessons. You'll build upon your existing knowledge and skills, continuously challenging yourself to progress into more complex and technically difficult choreography. Your teacher might choose to cover the following topics:
- Dance fitness and injury prevention
- Focus on your favorite dance style
- Learn more complex steps and routines
- Practice expressive movement
Sample Curriculum for Advanced Dance
Whether you're an experienced ballerina, looking to diversify your abilities by studying another form of dance, or hoping to perfect your individual style of hip hop dance, advanced lessons are for you. In advanced classes, you'll have the opportunity to work with a highly experienced dance professional to hone your talent and push your physical limits. Subjects covered in advanced dance depend greatly on the student's individual goals and interests, but your teacher might cover the following:
- Advanced choreographing
- Marketing yourself in performance arts
- Audition coaching
- Performance preparation
